The Green Bay Packers’ offense is broken. What needs to change? How do they reinvent themselves?
Honestly, I have no idea. It’s clear the league has figured out Matt LaFleur’s offense, and it’s put his brain in a blender. Injuries are one thing, but there’s no simplicity or go-to plays for this unit. The only thing you could call a “go-to” is the inside zone run to Josh Jacobs. The fact that the Packers have run this play into oblivion and the Eagles knew it was coming on fourth down is actually insane.
As football fans, we shouldn’t be able to predict what play is about to happen before it even happens. Yet that’s exactly what the Packers’ offense has become: predictable, stale, and paying for it now. It’s time to reinvent themselves.
They can start by giving Jordan Love the keys. The Eagles game was ugly, but you can’t blame all the offense’s struggles on him. Injuries and below average offensive line play have plagued this team all season. Still, every time the Packers run tempo late in a game or in the fourth quarter, Love finds rhythm fast and moves the ball downfield.
The conservative style of play Matt LaFleur wants to run clearly hasn’t worked up to this point. I’m not saying take Josh Jacobs completely out of the game plan, but open this thing up. The Rams and 49ers, two systems branched from the same tree, have evolved. It’s time for LaFleur to put his pride aside and let Jordan Love cook. How did the Packers make it to the divisional round in 2023? By doing exactly that.
Fifty million dollars a year is no joke, and there’s no reason not to trust the guy everyone believes can lead this offense.
The Packers’ receivers need to step up too. They might not be true number ones, but they’re still capable of making big plays. Keep it simple, put guys in positions to succeed by letting them run routes they’re good at. The Savion Williams experiment is dead. Run real routes, get real results. That should be the motto of this offense for the rest of the season.
The biggest concern for Packers fans should be the offensive line after losing Elgton Jenkins. The Packers now have a choice: start Sean Ryan at center or go with Jacob Monk, who has minimal experience at the position. Not ideal. Still, these guys are professionals, and they need to find a way to get the job done.
They have a big task ahead of them on Sunday against the Giants’ defensive front that contains four first-round picks.
It’s safe to say at this point that this has to be a get-right game and a must-win for the Green Bay Packers. Not only do they need to win, but they need the offense to show some type of spark if they want any chance of winning a playoff game, let alone getting to a Super Bowl.
