The Packers Need to Get Josh Jacobs Going Against the Panthers

You’re probably all thinking, didn’t this guy just say we need to put the football in Jordan Love’s hands more this season? Touché.

However, the Packers’ upcoming game against the Panthers needs to be a Josh Jacobs game. Jacobs is coming off a matchup against the Steelers where he averaged just 2.5 yards per carry on 13 attempts for 33 yards. On the year, Jacobs has an average of 3.6 yards per carry, which ranks near bottom of the league.

So, what’s going on with the Packers rushing attack?

Although Jacobs has been dealing with a calf injury lately, it really starts up front. You could argue that the offensive line isn’t as effective at run blocking as it was last season. It should be worth noting there have been a lot of moving pieces with this unit. Injuries to Zach Tom and Aaron Banks have forced players in and out of the lineup, and Elgton Jenkins even moved from guard to center this offseason.

There are plenty of reasons and excuses, but the running game simply needs to be better. The Packers’ offense was built on it last season, and it showed how much it opened up opportunities for the other weapons they have.

This upcoming game against the Panthers is a chance for them to figure things out. Carolina just allowed a monster performance from Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, who ran for 216 yards on 19 carries for two touchdowns (an average of 11.4 yards per carry).

By no means does Josh Jacobs need to rush for 200 yards against the Panthers, but it would be nice to see the run game look consistent throughout an entire game. Open holes at the line of scrimmage would be nice too. At one point this season, 98.4% of Jacobs’ yards came after contact. Safe to say, he isn’t getting much help from the offensive line.

The Packers don’t need Josh Jacobs to be Superman; they just need him to be consistent. A strong run game not only takes pressure off Jordan Love but also sets up the kind of balanced attack that wins in December and January. It’s time to reestablish that identity and make Lambeau a place no one wants to play come playoff time.
