The Packers Are Far from Perfect, but So Is Every Other Team in the NFL

The Packers beat the Bengals 27-18 to get to a 3-1-1 record that currently leads the NFC North. I don’t want to say this win was underwhelming because it’s difficult to win games in the NFL. However, the Packers have not looked the same after the dominance they showed the first two weeks of the season. There are plenty of good takeaways from this game, even though it was ugly at some points.

The big takeaway offensively is that the Packers’ rushing attack is all the way back. Josh Jacobs went off for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns on a 5.2 yard per carry average. This is the second game in a row the running game has looked good, even with a banged-up offensive line. Tucker Kraft also made his presence felt with a 19-yard touchdown reception to put the Packers up 24-10 in the fourth quarter.

The Packers offense is baffling to say the least. It’s as if they are trying to split an atom while moving the ball at times, and at other times they make it look easy. I know Matt LaFleur wants to spread the ball around to everyone, but this offense runs through Tucker Kraft and Josh Jacobs. When you get those guys get the ball, good things happen. Another guy I think you could add to this group is Matthew Golden. Golden finished this game with 3 catches for 86 yards showing off how explosive he can be for this offense. The breakout game is coming guys, just wait.

Besides the bad interception, I thought Jordan Love played a great game overall. A lot of Packers fans get fed up with him at times, but it’s to be expected at this point. He’s been making tight throws, using his legs, and seeing the field so far this season. One thing about Love is he isn’t going to dial it back and that showed late in the fourth quarter. On a critical 3rd and 9 with 2 minutes and 30 seconds left, he found Matthew Golden down field to help set the Packers up with a field goal that put this game away.

The Packers’ defense was utterly dominant in the first half after allowing zero points to the Bengals offense. At halftime, even though it was 10-0, it felt like 30-0 the way the Packers had control of this game. Then the third quarter happened. The Bengals went on a 10 minute, 17 play, 78-yard touchdown drive make it a one score game. That drive must’ve completely thrown this defense off because they went on to allow 11 fourth quarter points. This led to a 6-point Packers lead with about 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

There’s been a lot of discourse about the Packers’ secondary, specifically the corners. I do want to remind everyone they did just play against the best wide receiver duo in the NFL in Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins. Keisean Nixon may have had a tough outing but overall, has had a great season to date.

A big factor with this defense, is turnovers. The Packers’ defense has failed to force turnovers unlike last season where every game it felt like they would have at least one. They only have two turnovers so far this season. With games against the Cardinals, Panthers, and Giants coming up, you would like they could force a few in those games, right?

Maybe if Micah Parsons gets a few holding calls to go his way each game, the pressure he brings will amount to some turnovers happening. The Micah Parsons holding issue is no joke. Ever since the Browns game, this guy has been getting held at a stupid rate and none of these offensive lines are being held accountable by the officials. It’s not to say he isn’t making an impact, but the fact teams are clearly cheating and getting away with this is getting old fast. More and more fans are noticing it, and it needs to be addressed. I’m not saying holding should be called every time, but man it sure would be nice to see some of these blatant holds be called.

Quick shout out to the Lucas Havrisik, who stepped in for an injured Brandon McManus on Sunday. He went 5/5 on field goals and extra points in this game, ultimately hitting a field goal in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach.

Again, wins are wins and I am thankful this football team has a winning record. There isn’t one perfect team in the NFL this season and that should mean something when evaluating this Packers team. You can look at teams like the Bucs and Colts with 5-1 records that still have their weaknesses. The Bills and Eagles are main favorites and have both lost two straight games.

My main point is, I don’t think there is a clear top dog this season in the NFL. A lot of Super Bowl favorites have looked like world beaters one week and utterly terrible the next. The Packers are right in that category we have a lot of football left before we will truly know what this team is.

We’re on to Arizona. GO PACK GO!
