All Eyes Are On Jordan Love for a Major Matchup Against the Detroit Lions

Evan Siegle, packers.com

It was a brutal week last weekend for the Packers, injury-wise, in their win against the Jaguars. Jordan Love went down with a groin injury, along with star Jaire Alexander, rookie standout Evan Williams, and starting center Josh Myers. Alexander, Williams, and Myers all missed practice this week. While I was cooking up this blog, Evan Williams was officially ruled out of the game on Sunday. Jordan Love is going to be given up until game time on Sunday to see if he’s good to play. Not the start you want in a matchup against a powerhouse squad like the Detroit Lions.

The last time we saw Jordan Love play the Lions was on Thanksgiving last season, and boy, did he go off. Love threw for 268 yards and 3 passing touchdowns as the Packers turned their season around after a slow start. This time around, Love has way more snaps under his belt and is at home. It would be a shame if he isn’t playing in this matchup because of the groin injury. Luckily for the Packers, though, Malik Willis is standing by as the Packers' new Matt Flynn. Willis is 3-0 in games he’s played for the Pack so far this season and has looked solid in each one. Matt LaFleur hasn’t shied away when it comes to the play-calling with Willis, either. He’s been able to use his mobility and put him in spots to succeed.

If it comes down to it, you have to think the Packers are well-coached enough to muster up enough on both sides of the ball to win this game. It might be a Jeff Hafley “bag game,” if we’re being honest. He might pull out all the tricks to shut down this rolling Lions offense. It’ll be tough while missing key defensive pieces, but why else did they bring this guy in to lead the defense?

One thing we really haven’t seen Detroit do this season is play from behind. They had a close matchup in Minnesota against the Vikings, but other than that, they have been rolling. If Love isn’t in the lineup, you have to expect the Packers to try and get the lead early and manage the clock, forcing Detroit to take risks at the end of the game. Their offensive line is full of studs, and the Packers’ front seven have a tall task to shut down Detroit’s dynamic running-back duo of Sonic and Knuckles (David Montgomery & Jahmyr Gibbs). They won’t have Jameson Williams on the outside, who is serving a suspension, but Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta are both stud pass-catchers. Also, Jared Goff has been playing out of his mind and efficient this season.

This game is going to be a battle for both sides. It’s a divisional battle in the North, and the weather is going to be gross. Both sides want this one badly, especially when it comes to home-field advantage down the line. I’m so excited for this game, but come kickoff, I’ll be a nervous wreck.
