Victory Monday: Interceptions Don't Matter

Evan Siegle, packers.com

Interceptions don’t matter! (When you win, obviously.) That’s exactly what happened Sunday when the Packers beat the Texans. When’s the last time bad offense got bailed out by good defense in Green Bay? It’s been forever since a fan, let alone a Packers fan, could say that. Jordan Love threw two picks and so what? You’ve gotta take risks to win, and he’s proven he’s willing to. He’s thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this season and leads the league in TD passes. Add to that, the Packers are sitting at 5-2, even with him missing two games. Oh, and by the way, MVP favorite Patrick Mahomes is tied for most INTs with a negative TD-INT ratio and is still 6-0. Interceptions don’t matter as long as your QB shows up in crunch time.

Aside from those two picks, Love was throwing darts all day. His completion rate was 72.7%, tied for his best this season. Love’s three touchdowns came on a piss missile to Tucker Kraft, a breadbasket toss to Dontayvion Wicks, and Love’s 50th career touchdown pass to Josh Jacobs, who snagged his first-career receiving TD. Romeo Doubs balled out too, racking up 8 receptions for 94 yards.

But the real story was the Packers' defense, specifically in the red zone. S/O to the fan who defended the wall against Joe Mixon who tried to Lambeau Leap. Not today pal! The Packers pass rush showed up big in this game. No turnovers? No problem. The pressure up front was relentless, forcing CJ Stroud to have his worst game of the season (10/21, 86 yards), and sacking him four times. Stroud had a few big plays to keep the Texans in it, but the pass rush was in his face all day. It was awesome seeing Rashan Gary finally get a sack after going quiet since Week 1. DPOY candidate Xavier McKinney added a sack, and backup linebacker Eric Wilson stepped up huge with two sacks after Quay Walker left the game. Good coaching changes everything, and Jeff Hafley’s been a godsend as our new defensive coordinator.

The Packers' kicking was incredible in this game, and I’m not just talking about field goals. Danny Whelan was bombing punts all day, keeping us out of terrible field position. Then, of course, there’s the hero of the game, Brandon McManus. After getting iced on the initial game-winner, McManus stayed cool and nailed it anyway. The rest of the NFL better watch out because we’ve got ourselves a kicker, boys!

This was a measuring stick game, and the Packers proved they are real contenders. Even with the offense not looking pretty, winning a tough game against a strong Texans squad feels damn good. There’s nothing like the ride of an NFL season, and the Packers are rolling with three wins in a row. Soak in that Victory Monday, baby.
