Packers vs. Cardinals Preview: Lambeau Field Mudbowl?

Evan Siegle, packers.com

The Packers take on the Cardinals this weekend at Lambeau and it might get a little sloppy. How do they get it done on Sunday?

Well for starters, they need to contain Kyler Murray, who runs around like a toddler who just stole your iPhone. He just put up 83 rushing yards and a TD last week against the 49ers. The defense also needs to watch out for James Conner, a workhorse at 4.6 yards per carry. Devonte Wyatt’s probably out, so we need the defensive line to step up in this game. This feels like a Rashan Gary game. He’s been called out by the media (also by me), and I think he’s due for a monster game. Also they should just rush five every single time because it seems to work out just fine.

On the injury front, the secondary might be a little short-handed with Jaire Alexander and Carrington Valentine still questionable. But we’ve got Xavier McKinney, and the Cardinals aren’t exactly loaded at WR. Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride are Murray’s top two targets this season. McBride is coming off a 9-target game in a huge upset against the 49ers last week after sitting out the week prior with a concussion. The next two targets that follow them are Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch.

As for our offense? Jordan Love is getting back into the form we saw at the end of last season slowly but surely. He’s going to be more comfortable in the pocket in his third game back from injury and he’s got his weapons. Romeo Doubs is good to go, Christian Watson looks ready, and the entire O-line is crushing it—ranked #1 in pass blocking this season. Penalties are still a problem and now Rasheed Walker is questionable for Sunday. But! With a healthy Love and a loaded WR room, the offense is due for a big week.

One big factor, though? The weather. Lambeau is set for a classic mudfest: 55 degrees, rain, and 35mph wind gusts at kickoff. If it’s nasty, it might just be a Josh Jacobs legacy game if the Packers decide to just ground and pound against the Cardinals' defense like we saw in weeks two and three. Also, I’m a little worried about our kicker, Brayden Narveson, dealing with those winds. Not ideal.

The Cards aren’t a joke, but they’re beatable, we're at home, and Jordan Love is healthier. The offense is getting weapons back and also had a new one emerge in Tucker Kraft last week who is everything you want in a football player. Win this one, and we build even more momentum going into next week’s matchup against the Texans in the debut of the clean white-out unis. GO PACK GO!
