Packers Ground and Pound Their Way to Win Over Colts in Home Opener

Well, Packers fans, we got the job done. In the home opener against the Colts, with Malik Willis under center, the Packers pulled out an ugly but satisfying win. There was plenty of skepticism surrounding Willis and whether he could handle the pressure, but he did just enough to get the W. Credit to the Packers' rushing attack for taking the heat off Willis, allowing him to stay within his comfort zone all game long.

Let’s not forget about the offensive line. They were absolute monsters all game. The O-line gave Willis plenty of protection and opened up huge lanes for the running backs, allowing the ground game to run wild. Special shoutout to Josh Myers, who embodied the true meaning of “puke and rally.” Yes, you read that right. The dude literally threw up on the field, gathered himself, and kept playing like a beast. That’s the kind of gritty performance that defines Packers football.

Josh Jacobs was a man on a mission, racking up 151 yards on 32 carries. Willis chipped in with 41 yards of his own, and Jayden Reed added another 37 yards on the ground. The ground-and-pound approach made life easier for Willis, who wasn't asked to play hero ball. When he was called to throw, he was efficient—12/14 for 122 yards and a touchdown. Not bad for a guy who had plenty of doubters. If you’re keeping track, that’s a little better than that guy in Chicago who was the #1 overall pick.

The lone Packers' passing touchdown came early in the first quarter when Dontayvion Wicks found the end zone. Romeo Doubs also had a few clutch grabs to keep drives alive. Overall, you’ve got to hand it to Matt LaFleur. He crafted a game plan that set Willis up for success, leaning on the rushing attack and putting his QB in positions where he could thrive. The way he navigated the team through Jordan Love's absence was impressive, proving once again why he’s one of the top coaches in the league.

Now let’s talk about that defense, which was lights out all game. Anthony Richardson never looked comfortable in the pocket, and the Packers' defense was all over him, forcing him into three interceptions. Shoutout to Xavier McKinney for snagging his second pick of the season, along with Eric Wilson and the game-sealing Evan Williams INT on Richardson’s Hail Mary attempt. The aggressive, ball-hawking style of this defense is a complete 180 from last year. They’re meeting receivers at the point of attack and cutting down on those killer yards after the catch. Love to see it.

Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a flawless performance. It was a grind-it-out, ugly win, but a win is a win. And that’s exactly what this team needs to do while Jordan Love is on the mend with that knee injury. Up next, the Packers face another AFC South opponent in the Tennessee Titans. Their offense? Not impressive. Their defense? A much bigger challenge for the Willis-led Packers.

Let’s see if LaFleur and the rest of the Packers can cook up some magic next week
