Packers vs. 49ers Recap: The Future is Bright in Green Bay

And just like that, the season is over. What a ride it has been. No doubt this loss is going to sting, the Packers had so many opportunities and they just couldn’t capitalize on expanding their lead in this game.

You can’t help but be proud of this team. As the youngest team in the NFL in a transition season, the Packers found their guy at quarterback and won a playoff game. Obviously in a game like that against the 49ers, you want to seize the moment and win that game. But at the end of the day, the youth and inexperience of this team got the best of the Packers.

Going 2-5 on trips to the red zone is a real kick in the teeth. The offense had been cooking the last few weeks and we knew they could get their points but that just wasn’t the case. Adding in Carlson’s field goal miss too which would’ve kept this game tied after the CMC’s last touchdown makes it look even worse. We knew Carlson wasn’t great throughout the season and Matt LaFleur even said it himself. That’s the risk they took though and paid the price in this game.

I know people are going to be pissed at Matt LaFleur for some of the decisions he made in this game. But this game was close for its entirety, and you have to give him credit for keeping it that way against a loaded team like the 49ers. They were +9.5 underdogs and had multiple chances to solidify their lead. The Packers are on the cusp of something special and LaFleur is a big reason for that. The way he’s developed this offensive core and Jordan Love is a testament to how good of a coach he is.

Jordan Love didn’t have his greatest game, but it wasn’t his worst. This was a tough game to throw the ball in but that’s no excuse for how he threw it across the middle of the field tonight. Even after that interception to end the game, you can’t dismiss how well he’s played this season. The offense grew together throughout the season and introduced us to a bunch of stud receivers who are going to be around moving forward. Aaron Jones also played well in this game, and it would’ve been nice to see him get into the endzone. A lot of questions are going to be asked about his future but if they can work out a deal, I would love to have him on this team next season.

I will say though that the Packers' defense came to play in this game. They brought pressure to Purdy for most of the game and came up with multiple three-and-out stops to get the ball back in the Packers’ hands. They had a chance at a turnover, but Darnell Savage missed his opportunity at an interception that could’ve resulted in a pick-six. The defensive front balled out too, Kenny Clark was on one and they even had him lined up on the edge. Unfortunately, it came down to them to save the season on the 49ers’ last drive and the Joe Barry defense we saw for the bulk of the season showed up at that moment.

There’s not much else to say about this game other than how many missed opportunities the Packers had. It would’ve been really sweet to get to the NFC championship game and it was right at the tip of their fingers. This offseason is going to be interesting as the Packers have a few key players about to be free agents but also have a ton of draft capital and some cap space opening up.

The future is bright in Green Bay with this young core. Credit to Gutey for putting this thing together and to LaFleur for coaching these guys up. This season was a win and even though the loss stings now, it’s hard not to look ahead at the potential Jordan Love and this team has going forward.

It has been and always will be Go Pack Go forever.
