Packers vs. Chargers Preview

In a gold-package game matchup, the Packers will be facing off against the Los Angeles Chargers in Lambeau Field while wearing their classic 1950s uniforms.

The Packers are facing a lot of adversity yet again heading into this game. The explosive Chargers offense of Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen, and Austin Ekeler poses a big threat to the Packers’ defense which is still battling injuries.

As of Friday, the Packers added a new name to the injury report that you absolutely do not want to see. Rashan Gary reportedly had “a little mishap” during Friday’s practice session and is now listed as questionable for Sunday with a shoulder injury. Alongside Gary, Jaire Alexander and Quay Walker are also listed as questionable. The Packers will most likely be without Rudy Ford again on Sunday which makes for rookie Anthony Johnson to take over the starting role for the second time in his young career.

The Packers’ defense needs all the help they can get against this high-powered Chargers offense who put up 38 points last week in a loss to the Detroit Lions. Jaire Alexander more specifically needs to be available for this game to match up with star wide receiver, Keenan Allen. Allen has been the focal point of the Chargers passing game who has been riddled with injuries this season at the wide receiver position.            On the ground, the Packers face another running back who tears it up week in and week out. Austin Ekeler is one of the top running backs in the league and has to be licking his chops at the opportunity to rush against this “Swiss-cheese” Packers run defense. Don’t be surprised to see the classic two-downed linemen look when Joe Barry is calling plays again on Sunday. It sucks that it’s come to this point, but the Packers stopping the run is basically a lost cause. Hopefully this Sunday, they can turn it around. If they can hold Ekeler to under 80 rushing yards, I’d say that’s a win overall for the defense.

As for the Packers' offense, they need to quit it with the pre-snap penalties. It’s understandable to have a few here and there, especially with how young this team is. But it’s week 11 people, and this offense needs to quit shooting themselves in the foot if they have any hopes of winning games the rest of the season.

I somewhat like this matchup for Jordan Love and the rest of the offense. On paper, the Chargers' defense looks scary no doubt, but they are a very underwhelming team considering the talent and how much money they spend on stars for their team. Love is coming off a nearly 300-yard passing game and made a lot of great throws in doing so. Just for once it would be nice to see the running game compliment the passing game for a complete four quarters. Getting the running game going to start the game is essential in that. Getting Aaron Jones involved a ton is a given, but as of recently, AJ Dillon has played very well after a slow start to the season. They don’t need to split carries evenly, but getting those guys involved takes a lot of heat off Jordan and the passing game.

All I’m asking for is complimentary football. We’ve seen it in little spurts with this team but not for a full game. This Chargers defense has a lot of holes in it, and I think it’s a unit the Packers’ offense can capitalize on.

Going back to the beginning of the blog. I have to mention again that this is a gold-package game at noon central time. We all know how these games normally go, AFC west opponent, low energy, and more opposing team colors in Lambeau than you would like to see. Hopefully, these gold-package fans will show up and show out for this game. The Chargers have a lot of star players, nonetheless, you’re going to Lambeau Field for game day. Why wouldn’t you show up and support the green and gold?

This is a game that could go in a multitude of directions. Both teams have been unpredictable this season, it's hard to tell what you’re going to get from them. The Packers have a chance to start a little run here to maybe get a playoff spot at the end of the season. This game could be the start of that. As mentioned in previous blogs, the NFC stinks as a whole conference, and anyone could get that last spot come playoff time. Why not the Green Bay Packers?
