Packers Fight Through Three Quarters of Adversity in Comeback Win vs the Saints
Packers Fight Through Three Quarters of Adversity in Comeback Win vs the Saints
The Packers had a miraculous comeback Sunday against the
Saints after not scoring any points through the first three quarters.
The Packers ended the third quarter driving all the way down
the field but failing to score any points as time expired in the third quarter.
The Packers offense had finally stayed on the field long enough to give the
defensive unit some rest.
That rest was key as the Packers kicked a field goal to start
the fourth quarter and the defense marched out on the field to get a stop on
the Saints offense who was without Derek Carr who left midway through the game.
That defensive stop led to the first touchdown drive of the quarter for the
Packers with Jordan Love leading the offense down the field and running it in
on his own to get the score. That score followed with a two-point conversion to
close the gap 17-11 in favor of the Saints.
That sustained drive contributed to the defense getting rest who
again came out to get another stop on the Saints offense to give the Packers an
opportunity to tie up the ball game.
Jordan Love then headed out onto the
field with the opportunity to give the Packers the lead with a touchdown drive.
The Packers absolutely diced the
Saints secondary, Love connected with Jayden Reed on a 30-yard throw to set up the
Packers up in the redzone. Love then connected with Romeo Doubs who looks like
a clone of James Jones in the redzone for a touchdown pass. The Packers would
take the lead 18-17 with just enough time left for the Saints to have a shot to
score.
The Packers defense gave a scare at
the end of the game as the Saints drove down the field to attempt a
game-winning 46-yard field goal that would end up missing right and give the
Packers the win in their home-opener.
Now, some will say Derek Carr not
playing is the only reason Green Bay won this game, well that is just silly.
The Packers were without the whole left side of their offensive line and
missing arguably the two most impactful playmakers on offense in Aaron Jones
and Christian Watson.
The first three quarters were ugly no
doubt, but this is a young team, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride all
throughout this season. But, with the odds stacked against them in the fourth
quarter, this young team kept their heads up and continued to have confidence
that they could win the game.
Also, you can’t forget to mention the
job Matt Lafleur did in this game. Being without multiple starters, he showed
how great coaches adapt when impactful players aren’t playing. The play calling
in the second half along with keeping the players heads high while down is a
testament to Lafleur’s coaching ability.
The Packers are now 2-1 tied for
first in the NFC north with the Detroit Lions who they will play on a short
week this Thursday in primetime at Lambeau field. This game is major for playoff
implications down the line and will somewhat show who the real leader of the
NFC north is. Hopefully this Thursday we will see the return of some offensive
starters and Jaire Alexander on defense for this big game.
Packer fans should be excited, we
haven’t even seen the full potential of the offense and defense together yet in
the same game. A full game of complimentary football is yet to be played and
the sky is the limit for the youngest team in the NFL.
