Rationality During the Week, Anything Goes on Gameday

Being a football fan, mixed emotions are guaranteed on any given Sunday while watching your favorite team. This season, it has become pretty apparent with Packer fans, including myself. During the week, keeping a level head and sort of rationality when analyzing the team is pretty easy. But on Sunday, during the action? Hell, all rationality is off the table.

Why is it that we as fans act this way? It’s quite simple actually. The love a diehard fan shares for their team is almost unconditional. The ability to be rational during the week is a testament to how much they care after unloading on their favorite team following a loss.

For example, the Packers may be struggling right now and look bad. During the week, I will analyze and suspect what should reasonably happen before the game starts. But on Sunday during the game and shortly after, you have a right as a fan to rage and let out your frustration if your team stinks.

It’s simple and honestly quite fair in reality. Nothing that we as fans say will truly affect the way guys play and how the game is played out. Fans will always be there for their team, players come and go, but the fans will never die out. There is a certain amount of accountability that fans do hold an organization too and there’s nothing wrong with that. They may not be making decisions in the front office or the game plan, but who shows up to the games and spends their hard-earned money? The fans do.

This season, Packer fans no doubt are experiencing this. With multiple losses in a row, fans want instant gratification and improvement, including myself. Sure, it may not be reasonable, but it’s all out of a sense of love for the team.

This season so far has been tough to watch, but we had a sense of that going into it. I personally believe that it takes a full season to determine what a team will do heading forward into the future. The Packers are a great organization for that specific reason. Firing players and coaches mid-season just isn’t the answer and will most likely hurt the team more than help in most instances.

This upcoming game against the Vikings will be a true character test for the Packers. With multiple injuries and a three-game losing streak, the Packers must come together and execute a football game from beginning to end. It’s a long season and we are almost halfway through it, but things in Green Bay still have the potential to change this season.
